With so many IT courses on the market today, it’s sometimes daunting to find the right one. Find one that matches up with your personal character, and that’s needed commercially.

There’s a wide range of courses to choose from. Some people simply want User Skills from Microsoft, some want training for careers in Databases, Programming, Networking or Web Design – and these are all possible. But with this much choice, don’t leave it to chance. We’d advise you to share your ideas with an advisor who has knowledge of the IT industry, and will guide you to where you want to go.

Modern training methods currently give students the chance to learn on an interactive course, that costs significantly less than traditional courses. The low overhead structure of these courses allows everybody access to them.

If there’s any chance you’ll be enrolling with a certification company which still provides ‘in-centre workshop days’ as a feature of their programme, then take note of these hassles experienced by most IT hopefuls:

* Regular long journeys – 100′s of miles a lot of the time.

* Taking time out of work – most colleges only offer weekday availability and often group days together in a clump. This isn’t ideal for most people who work, and it’s made more problematic if you include the travel time on top.

* Don’t disregard the lost vacation days. We typically get four weeks vacation allowance. If half is given up to classes, then we aren’t going to be doing much vacationing.

* Workshops normally reach their maximum intake very quickly, giving us the only option of a slot that doesn’t really suit.

* A lot of trainees want to work as quickly as possible, but some need a more gentle learning curve and want to set their own pace that fits. This generates tension and bad atmosphere on many workshops.

* A lot of students talk of the high costs involved with travelling back and forth to the training centre while covering the cost of accommodation and food becomes prohibitively expensive.

* Not wanting employers to know about the training can be high on the list of priorities to most attendees. Why would you want to lose any possible promotions, wage increases or accomplishment at work because you’re getting trained in a different area. If your boss finds out that you’re undertaking certification in a completely different market, what are they going to be thinking?

* Most of us avoid posing questions when surrounded by our fellow attendees – to avoid appearing stupid.

* If you occasionally work elsewhere in the country for several days at a time, imagine the increased difficulty in getting to the necessary workshops, when time is at a premium.

For a far more flexible approach, use pre-made lessons at home, in comfort – taking them when it’s convenient to you – not anybody else.

If anything comes up, logon to the 24×7 support facility (that we hope you’ll insist on with any technical courses.) Bear in mind, if your PC is a notebook PC, study isn’t restricted to the home or office.

Just go back and re-cover all the modules whenever you need to prep for an exam. There’s also no need to take notes as you’ll have direct access to the instruction whenever you want to go back to it.

Could it be simpler: Time and money is saved and travelling is avoided altogether; and of course you have a far more relaxed study setting.

Those that are drawn to this type of work are often very practical, and won’t enjoy sitting at a desk in class, and endless reading of dry academic textbooks. If you’re thinking this sounds like you, opt for more involving, interactive learning materials, with on-screen demonstrations and labs.

Long-term memory is enhanced when we use multiple senses – this has been an accepted fact in expert circles for years now.

Find a course where you’ll receive a selection of CD and DVD ROM’s – you’ll start with videos of instructor demonstrations, and be able to use virtual lab’s to practice your new skills.

Be sure to get a study material demo’ from the school that you’re considering. The package should contain expert-led demonstrations, slideshows and lab’s for you to practice your skills in.

You’ll find that many companies will only provide training that is purely available online; and while this is acceptable much of the time, think what will happen if your access to the internet is broken or you get intermittent problems and speed issues. It is usually safer to have actual CD or DVD ROMs that will solve that problem.
